What is an NRA Range Safety Officer?

The NRA Range Safety Officer program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally-recognized range safety officer certification. NRA Range Safety Officers are people who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

Course Description

This course develops NRA Certified Range Safety Officers (RSO) with the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

Those individuals who do not hold a trainer rating must attend a Range Safety Officer course. Range Safety Officer courses are conducted by Chief Range Safety Officers. (“Chief Range Safety Officers” are those individuals certified to train NRA Range Safety Officers.) The Range Safety Officer course is a nine-hour course that consists of classroom and practical exercises.

Range Safety Officer candidates will learn roles and responsibilities of an RSO;

  • Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Range inspection
  • Range rules
  • Range briefings
  • Emergency procedures
  • Firearm stoppages and malfunctions.

Each Range Safety Officer Candidate will receive an:

  • RSO Student Study Guide
  • Basic Firearm Training Program brochure,
  • NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure,
  • Instructor Application/Course Evaluation form.

Notes: There is no shooting, dry firing, or ownership program associated with this course. Safety only. Pre-registration is required so that I will have sufficient materials on hand for all participants. I need two weeks lead time to insure delivery from the NRA resource center. NRA Range Safety Officers must be 21 years of age or older. Certs are issued by the NRA training department, therefore there is also additional certification and processing fees payable to the NRA ($30.00 for NRA members & $50.00 for non-members) for initial certification as a NRA RSO.
